Bournemouth Council, in partnership with Sky and British Cycling has today announced details of the route for Sky Ride Bournemouth, taking place on Sunday 10 June.
The route for the free community cycling event will take in some of the town’s best attractions including the Bournemouth Eye balloon, Bournemouth Pier and Meyrick Park. The 6km route will be traffic free from 10am -2pm allowing people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to enjoy the ride at their own pace. There is no start or finish point so participants can join the route whenever they want and ride it as many times as they like, all for free.
Sky Ride Bournemouth is a day for the whole family and there will be plenty of activities taking place along the route and in Meyrick Park to keep everybody entertained, including fun fair rides, magic workshops, free face painting, stilt walking and much more.
Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport, Cleansing & Waste, said: “We are very excited to have Sky Ride return to Bournemouth. It provides the perfect opportunity for everybody from seasoned cyclists to those that have never cycled before to get outdoors and enjoy the health benefits and fun that cycling can offer. Cycling is high on the Council’s list of priorities and by having a traffic free route it illustrates our support for all forms of cycling.”
This year, participants who register in advance for the event will be entered into a prize draw to win a signed Team Sky cycling jersey, a Sky+HD package, a brand new bike or an amazing cycling experience with Sir Chris Hoy.
In addition to taking part in the main event, residents can also take part in Sky Ride Local rides. These free weekly small community bike rides give participants the chance to get out and explore their local area. Rides are led by a British Cycling trained leader, who is on hand to provide support and tips on how to improve your cycling, whatever your age or ability. There is also the Breeze Network, which is a programme of bike rides and support just for women.
