In
view of the new 'Freedom of Information Act' Tobias Ellwood has
written to the Prime Minister asking for the legal justification
for Britain going to war with Iraq:
Rt
Hon Tony Blair MP
Prime Minister
10 Downing Street
London
SW1A 2AA

January 2005
Legal
Justification for War with Iraq
In
view of the Freedom of Information Act coming into force, could
I formally ask for the legal justification for Britain going to
war with Iraq in 2003?
I
share the view of many in Britain who were not convinced that at
the time, war was necessary and that Parliament may have been mislead
into believing there was a credible threat posed my Saddam Hussain's
regime.
Could
I also seek your views on the news that the Iraq Survey Group, tasked
with finding the weapons of mass destruction has ended its mission
having found no evidence of an active WMD programme.
As
Prime Minister, I am sure you are aware that war with another state
must always be a last resort after all diplomatic efforts to keep
the peace have failed. Military intervention can only be justified
when an aggressive state not only has the ability, but the also
the intention harm our allies or us.
As
this has been one of the defining decisions of your premiership,
it seems only reasonable for you to share with the people of Britain,
the legal justification for taking Britain to war.
Yours
sincerely
Tobias
Ellwood
