Bournemouth Council were urged to recognise the huge concern
of local residents over Telecommunications Masts at their meeting
this week (Tuesday 25th July).
The
Council reluctantly accepted legal advice that no action should
be taken against the operators of the Fisherman's Walk mobile phone
mast. However, this was not before a Conservative amendment was
passed highlighted the Council's disappointment and contrition over
the bungled handling of the operator's planning application.
The
mast in Fisherman's Walk was erected after the Planning Department
had made an error in the correspondence refusing permission with
the operator concerned.
Moving
the amendment, Cllr Anne Filer (Eastcliff & Springbourne) said:
"Telecommunications Masts in residential areas are of the greatest
concern to many people."
"We
understand the disappointment and reluctance of the Planning Board
to go against legal advice. However, I do feel that we cannot just
let this matter go through without proper and open debate."
Anne
continued: "The Council's own medical officer, Dr. Susan Turnbull,
gave a most informative presentation to the members of the Health
Scrutiny Panel last week on this subject Councillors on the panel
remain concerned that masts and phones are safe. Dr Turnbull said
that we simply don't know yet what problems might emerge in 20 or
30 years time."
Conservative
Group Leader, Stephen MacLoughlin (Central Ward) added: "Bournemouth's
Conservative Councillors felt it to be imperative that future generations
know that the decision not to pursue the issue Fisherman's Walk
mast further was taken with the greatest reluctance by Councillors.
Anne's amendment made sure this was the case."
