May 2007 Local Elections:
All Change at the Town Hall

After four years in office the Lib Dems were comprehensively thrown out of the Town Hall and replaced by a Conservative administration with a majority of 41.

The main election issues were overdevelopment, the Winter Gardens and the prospect of building a casino next to the Pavilion. The Lib Dems won the 2003 local elections promising to 'save the Winter Gardens' only a few months later to have it bulldozed. They also oversaw the largest spate of development the town has ever seen. However the final straw was the Lib Dem's support for a casino. The town has never come to terms with another Lib Dem land mark, namely the IMAX. So it was surprising to learn the a deal, committing the Conservatives to a casino was authorized by the Lib Dems at 6.45pm on election night.
