Finding a solution to the traffic problems

A Working Group was set up by Tobias Ellwood, Parliamentary Candidate for Bournemouth East, in March 2003, with the aim of finding practical solutions to the traffic issues in and around King's Park.

The Group was made up of representatives of sports and interest groups in the King's Park area.

Tobias Ellwood presented the results this Working Group to the Council in May. Council has a few months to use the legal arguments provided to keep King's Park Drive open.

Practical solutions to traffic issues
The Working Group's report also contained practical solutions designed to help ease congestion in the wider area. For example:

- New slip Road on to Wessex Way from King's Park Drive
-
Use of the Holdenhurst Road bus lane after matches
- Park and Ride schemes from other car parks
- Erection of cycle bays around the stadium

AFC Bournemouth has some of the best parking facilities of any second division club, but access to them is poor, resulting in traffic chaos on match days.

The Working Group, which included football supporters, major residents' groups, the Indoor and Outdoor Bowls Clubs and AFC Bournemouth, have now expressed their views. It is now up to the Council to produce pragmatic solutions to resolve the traffic problems.

Long Term Solution
In the long term, the Five Parks Act should be amended through Parliament to better reflect the needs of those who use or pass through the park.

AFC Bournemouth: No Help from the Council

The Council has decided not to allow AFC Bournemouth to rent out its car park to JP Morgan.

Such an arrangement (coupled with a new slip road back onto the Wessex Way at the top of King's Park Drive) would have helped imporve traffic, secure the financial future of the Club and allowed further investment in King's Park community facilities.
