Ellwood MP has held a series of meetings with NILGOSC, the
long term lease holder for the IMAX building, to see if the IMAX
could be turned into something the town can be proud of.
The closing down of the IMAX by the owners Sheridan Group,
means there is an opportunity to utilize the building in a different
way, for example replacing the cinema with an indoor swimming pool.
Unfortunately,
by closing its doors so soon (as the IMAX was not making money)
the Sheridan Group is in a contractual dispute with NILGOSC. Until
this issue is settled in the courts, the building cannot be altered.
If
the dispute is resolved amicably there is an opportunity to turn
the structure, located in prime position, into something which is
less of an eyesore. As Bournemouth is a sea side resort, seeking
to attract families, many residents would like to see the return
of a wet weather facility such as a swimming pool. This would compensate
for the closure of the BIC pool.

The dispute between
Sheridan and NILGOSC was due to go to court, but an out of court
deal was agreed. It is unlcear whether the IMAX doors will open
again. Sadly, for Bournemouth, until the Sheridan Group vacate the
building little can be done to alter the sight.
